Transtector SPD Protects Wireless Radio Equipment from
Multiple Surges

Sometimes the effectiveness of surge protection is simple to demonstrate. So is its value.

Transtector Systems recently partnered with FluidMesh, a manufacturer of outdoor wireless Ethernet radio equipment, to surge-test radios, underscoring the importance of high-quality surge protection. The results clearly substantiate the significance of surge protection in today’s network topologies, providing critical protection for high-value transmission equipment.

How the Test Worked

In a lab environment, Transtector engineers set up two different FluidMesh radios (FM-3200-ENDO and FM-4200-MOBI); one of each model in a standalone configuration, and one of each with a Transtector ALPU-FIT-F140 surge protection device (SPD).

Engineers then performed a series of five strikes to each radio, utilizing a 2 kV/1 kA 8/20 µs combination waveform and measuring peak voltage after each surge.

outdoor wireless Ethernet radio equipment, FluidMeshRadios without an SPD were non-functional after a single surge, while those with protection were fully functional after the series of five. In addition, the SPD in each test eliminated arcing and reduced peak voltage measurements by 60 percent. Additional testing in other labs and with other radio brands produced similar results, with the absence of an SPD leading to irreversible damage.

What it Means

Long-term performance of network equipment is crucial to meeting customer expectations for continuous, high-quality service—especially in today’s data-driven communications world. The “right” surge protection—engineered to key specifications, innovatively designed to ensure quality—helps to prevent degradation and/or destruction of equipment.

As the lab tests demonstrated, the relatively low-cost investment of an SPD (compared to pricier network components) is a simple way to ensure long-term network capabilities.

Perhaps more significantly, selecting a reliable SPD manufacturer can be the difference between short-term protection and long-term performance. Equipment may appear to withstand small surge events, for example, but over time these seemingly insignificant events can lead to data delivery degradation, even in cases where it appears the active equipment is still functional.

In other words, not all SPDs are engineered to ensure high data throughput and robust protection against surge events. With Transtector, you gain simple, effective surge protection that helps minimize service interruption, site repairs, and, ultimately, lost revenue.

Transtector SPD solutions help guarantee data signal integrity (quality), data throughput (speed) and equipment connectivity (services). For long-term protection from surges, transients and other power anomalies, choosing Transtector is choosing wisely, and the testing proves it.
