Public safety agencies across North America have adopted Project 25 (P25) as the set of standards for interoperable digital two-way wireless communications. Beyond local, county, tribal, state and federal agencies, adoption by industries such as utilities, airports, transit, petroleum and chemical companies means that P25 sets the standard for two-way radio products.
Administered by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), P25 is the result of collaboration between public safety agencies, industry leaders, and organizations such as the NASTD, NSA, NITA and others. Its significance is difficult to overstate; in fact, government agencies globally have adopted P25 for mission-critical communications, including in Australia, Russia and South America.
Where Does P25 Apply?
In a white paper titled “Project 25 Interoperable Communications for Public Safety Agencies,” Motorola describes P25 as an expanding suite of standards that grows as new technologies evolve. As network topologies and technologies advance, the interfaces where P25 applies continues to grow. Some of these include:
- Common air interface
- Inter-RF subsystem interface
- Subscriber data peripheral interface
- Fixed station interface
- Console substation interface
- Data network interface
- Telephone interconnect interface
