Data Drives Continuing Growth of Mobile Networks, and Need for Protection and Reliability

Cisco recently unveiled global mobile data statistics and projections for the next four years, and the numbers reveal what we all know—data usage continues to grow significantly, emphasizing the absolute necessity of reliable networks.

Power and surge protection, of course, plays a critical role in this reliability requirement. Protecting mission-critical equipment from strikes, surges and other anomalies is crucial to maintaining a high-performing network that can deliver the data users require. We’re here to help with that.

For now, let’s look at some of the numbers.

According to the Cisco report (see it here), global mobile data traffic will increase sevenfold between 2016 and 2021, with smartphones accounting for 80 percent of this traffic. Mobile traffic will represent 20 percent of all IP traffic by 2021.

Here are some other highlights of the 2021 projections:

• Monthly global mobile data traffic will reach 49 exabytes (one billion gigabytes).
• Annual traffic will reach more than half a zettabyte (one trillion gigabytes).
• Per capita mobile devices will reach 1.5.
• Average global connection speeds will surpass 20 Mbps.
• Video will account for more than 75 percent of all mobile data traffic.

Now, contrast these projections with numbers from 2016 (also in the report), and you’ll see the growth that we all know is happening:

• Global mobile data traffic grew 63 percent in 2016, reaching 7.2 exabytes per month.
• Mobile data traffic has grown 18-fold over the past five years.
• Users added 429 million mobile devices and connections in 2016, growing to 8 billion total.
